ohh nooo

so today i'm sending you to a new site because i'm no longer able to post from my mac or from my company network because somehow this blog has been blocked as spam and objectionable.

i've exported all my hard work to a new site (for now):

see you there...

Great Place to Walk a Dog

Gotta love this place. Dog loves it, anyway.

Wide Load

On my long and terrible commute the other night, I saw this truck, and already feeling a bit down-in-the-dumps, saw the sign on the back of it, Extra Wide, and thought of myself.

Snoozing to Animal Planet

This is what my dog was sleeping to. In reality, it's my husband who should be watching these dog-training shows. It's all old hat to my dog (see pic below).

Ahhhhhhh

Ahhhh to be able to sleep like this. Our german shepherd Max sure has it nailed.

Old Growth

So my cousin does a regular jaunt from the San Francisco Bay area up in to the Sierras. She sent me this picture from her iPhone and says that these are her favourite trees. I can see why! They are fantastic. I've done that route with her before but I don't remember them at all...must've been yakking...

If The Shoe Fits

Friend was in town shopping for daughter's prom and daughter was in another town in school...Friend would fire off cellphone pics and daughter would respond. I vote for these shoes but apparently the clerk in the store was less than pleasant when she discovered images of the shops' wares were being fired through the ether.

Sheep

These are some local sheep, the ones that are guarded by the dog I posted a pic of, a week or so ago.

Honey of a Job

Another one of those twisted things that tickles my funny bone. This is a porta-potty that has "Hogan's" stamped on the side - presumably, the company that supplies them to construction sites in the area.

Well, it seems to me that outhouses and their ilk are sometimes called Honey Wagons. And Hogan's is the largest beekeeper in this part of the province. And if they supply outhouses to construction sites as well, well, that's just plain funny IMHO.

The Most Crowded Place in Toronto

My job requires that I go to the Chinese Consulate in Toronto on a more-or-less regular basis and the sheer number of people in there can be extraordinary. Terrible, in the summer. But this particular day last week wasn't too bad.

Feral Cats

Woke up one morning last week to find these critters snuggled in behind my hedgehog bootscraper.

Should they adopt us for good, we thought we'd better come up with names and as Deliverance-like as possible, given the area we live in. An enterprising friend suggested Daryl and Daryl, which we thought was a hoot - and even funnier when we later saw them with a third kitten, hiding under the neighbours' lilac bush. So now we have Larry, Daryl and Daryl.

Driving in Southern California

I've been asking friends and family with iPhones to send me pics of their journeys - hence the Skye photos, and the Taiwan chicken heart one etc.

Yesterday, my cousin had to do a road trip in California and sent me this photo of the I5, heading north towards the San Francisco area. Sure beats my commute, but I guess if I had to do it a couple of times a week, I'd soon be calling the I5 my highway from hell, just as I do the 401.

Factory Fire

Sad news the other day when a nearby factory burned. I could think only of the people who lost their jobs.

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Midges

These are midges (or as a German friend seems to call them, midgets - as in, "OMG there are midgets in my car"). Very annoying. The only time you really see them is in swarms, which means there is midge sex going on right in your eyes, mouth and hair.

China

This is a popular coffee shop in Doumen, China - Mode Coffee; picture sent by intrepid-iPhone-reporter colleagues. It's close to factories and has good food. I've never been, but may go one day!

Guarding the Sheep

Local sheep dog doing his guarding thing.

Mini Ice Cream

Not sure what the point of these mini ice cream cones is. Just meant I ate 5 of them instead of one big one. Delicious - served up by friends in my old hometown.

Toronto

Busy city. Had to go in for work the other day.

Sign

This tickled my funny bone. Bought a sandwich at a local cafeteria - I ordered a black forest ham with cheese - the sandwich was 4.50 + 50c for the cheese. I said to the clerk, so if I buy a salami, ham and cheese, it's 4.75? How about if I just get a salami, ham and cheese with no salami? She said, OMG I never noticed that before. She refunded my quarter and then forgot to add my cheese, which I didn't notice until I was down the road and back at my desk, sigh.

Ewwww Eating a Taiwanese Delicacy

Another traveling colleague - this one to Taiwan. I said, show me some pics of your business trip and this is the one that stood out: he went to a restaurant where someone ordered a plate of chicken hearts.

Skye

Another photo from the Isle of Skye - closer to the Cuillin Mountains. It looks fantastic, eh?

Boat Ride

What a fab boat ride this was.

Waiting for the ferry home

Long week over, waiting for the boat that will take me home.

Portree, Isle of Skye

Another fab pic from my work buddy - this is Portree, capital of the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

Dinner on Collins bay

Lug Tread beer, a local brew and this view ... great end to a lousy commute!

Parliament

I love Ottawa.

Scientific?

Had to laugh when I saw this sign..."scientific palm reading"...

My Highway - And I'm Not On It

Here's the Highway From Hell - and I'm not on it but flying over it. Whew, that was a fab commute that week!

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Isle of Skye

Another great pic of the Isle of Skye from a work buddy who's visiting there. The mountains in the distance are the Cuillin Mountains.

Dinner at the Airport

Quick airport dinner. The sandwich arrived later (felt I had to add that in case you thought I just had a beer for dinner).

Sunday, May 10, 2009

Perfect

Ahhhhhh.

Saturday, May 9, 2009

Greenbelt, eh?

This brand new sign is hilarious. It reads something like: Welcome to Burlington, A Greenbelt Community".

I used to live in this city, and we fought and fought against development. To no avail. There WAS a greenbelt in Burlington but it will soon be gone forever. Shame on them. It's a UNESCO site, too. Or was...

Anyway, this was my first visit back in a while and I laughed when I saw this brand new sign. How ironic.

Tidal Loch

A colleague's travelling in the UK right now and sent this photo of a tidal loch in Scotland. I love it!

Mud Puppy

This dog is a mud-diviner. Gets to the point where you just give up worrying about the mess.

Rainy Commute

Did you know I have a terrible commute? This day, it took me nearly 5 hours because of the blinding rain.

Tuesday, May 5, 2009

Sign Maker

My husband is making a sign for Studio on the Bay, a local gallery owned by Terry Culbert and Barb Hoegenauer. Both are amazing artists!

Chasing Cormorants

Today's post is late again as that bug cropped up with my mac/firefox/blogger software.

Took this yesterday - fellow was chasing cormorants on his jet ski - which I thought was mean - but the other locals thought was fine (they are considered pests - well, the birds are).

Hot

It was warm last week. I like winter.

Saturday, May 2, 2009

Snowy

A Snowy Owl across the road from my house (taken with - gasp - real camera and not with iPhone). I've become a birder (not really, but I could be one) (a birder drives down our country roads, sees a bird, slams on the brakes, leaps out of the car to photograph, leaving door/s wide open, oblivious to the potential for any other cars to be on the road at the same time).

Lunch Out

I enjoy going out for lunch with my colleagues. Especially to a patio on one of those summer days (this wasn't one of them).

Beer Cart

I love beer, which makes it a good thing that I'm Canadian. I sometimes do my dreadful commute by train and incredibly, there's a beer cart that comes along every once in a while.

(The picture was blurry because of the train's rocking movement and not because of the beer consumption).

Home?

Ahhh. Last night I got to visit some friends in my previous hometown. In a way, I wish I still lived there - but knowing me if I did, then I'd wish I lived in my new home. I guess it's good to have multiple places to call "home". Or places you'd move back to.

A Bug in My Hotel Room

Staying in a hotel is such a gift, literally. And sometimes, it's all part of the adventure. Like this time: I woke up to find this critter on my hotel bed. At first I thought, OMG, what next (having switched rooms at midnight due to a non-working toilet) and having had quite the adventuresome journey that day.

I didn't complain or anything because I remembered that we'd had one of these beetles in our bedroom this weekend and that we'd kept putting him outside (but you see that we have holes everywhere if you've seen previous blog posts here) (and the Hummer of a Spider post - what is it with these returning critters?) and I'd wager this poor fellow had crawled in to my suitcase and ridden in to the city with me.

Hole

Husband's doing the dishes one night and drops a spoon between the counter and the fridge. In most people's houses this would not be an issue but in ours, it meant that he had to go down in to the (country, and very rough) cellar to retrieve it - because there's a hole in the floor.

(so I later tell a friend this story who responds, well that gives new meaning to the idea "open concept")

Sunday, April 26, 2009

Crack

See the crack in the floor, how it so closely outlines the shape of our (old) couch? Well, we moved the couch to that location in our tv room less than a week ago. Methinks that the floor needs some additional supports. Tomorrow I'll be posting about another floor issue.

Saturday, April 25, 2009

Hummer of a Spider

This guy would climb down the filing cabinet by my desk. I'd carry him away. A few minutes later, there he'd be, climbing down my filing cabinet. So I'd carry him away. We played that game all day long. He was as big as a Hummer, though doesn't appear that big now that I look at him.

Taking the Train

I have no idea what this photo is about lol, I emailed it to my blog and have forgotten which photo I chose to send. It's probably train-related as I commuted by train tonight.

I think the blogger software is not cooperating with my Mac Firefox software - maybe that's it, instead of my having booted myself off the Island.

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Oh no!

In some weird twist of fate (and not a suprising one I guess), I've managed to vote myself as objectionable (seriously!) and cannot post from my mac. So I'm truly writing from my iPhone. I'll be back later today.

Sometimes I just need a night of peace and quiet and in those instances, I welcome traveling for my job!

Skyway

This is the Skyway Bridge heading from Niagara direction to Toronto via the Queen Elizabeth Highway. Nothing terribly exciting but it does close occasionally when the winds exceed 100 kmh. And tractor trailers do get blown over during wind storms.
